If you suffer from lower back pain, you know how even the most mundane activities can become excruciating very quickly. Things like tying your shoes or picking something up off the ground can send your back into painful spasms that can last for hours. While this has impacted the lives of men and women for years, scientists are now studying the impact it can have on one very important area – sex.
Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada recently had a study published in the medical journal Spine, where they looked into the best positions men should engage in while having sex to help avoid any unnecessary stress to their bad backs. To do this, they enlisted the help of ten couples who have had at least one year of sexual experiences together to participate in the study.
Once in the facility, the couples were then instructed to have sex with each other as they normally would in a variety of ways. The actions were captured with motion-detecting cameras so the scientists could study which positions put the most amount of undue stress on the backs of the men. What they found is that spooning and missionary style were the safest for those with chronic back issues.
While this study is important, the researchers wrote in their report how much more work they have ahead of them. This study focused solely on men, while back issues are just as common with women. The pain also depends on the individual himself and how the couples interact with each other in bed. According to the American Chiropractic Association, 31 million Americans suffer from lower back pain.
